Navigating Big Emotions: A Gentle Start to the New School Year at Discovery Preschool

A brand-new school year is here—and with it comes a mix of excitement, nerves, and big feelings for both children and parents alike. At Discovery Preschool, we know the first week can feel like a whirlwind of change. New faces, new routines, and new expectations can bring out big emotions, and that’s completely normal.

Whether this is your child’s very first time in a classroom or they’re returning after summer break, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Tears at Drop-Off? Totally Normal.

It’s very common for young children to cry during the first few days (or even weeks) of school. This doesn’t mean they don’t like school—it means they’re adjusting. These tears are a natural part of learning how to separate and trust new caregivers.

Here are a few tips to make drop-off smoother:

  • Stay consistent. Create a quick, predictable goodbye routine—like a hug, a high-five, and a cheerful “Have a great day!”
  • Avoid sneaking out. While it may feel easier, sneaking out can make children more anxious and less trusting over time.
  • Keep goodbyes upbeat. Show your child that you trust they’ll have a good day, even if they’re feeling unsure.

Our teachers are pros at comforting and redirecting little ones—and we’re always happy to give updates once they’ve settled in.

Big Feelings After School Are Okay, Too

Even if your child has a great day, you might notice clinginess, meltdowns, or tiredness at home. This is totally normal! Preschool is full of stimulation, and children often “hold it together” during the day, then release emotions once they’re back in the safety of home.

Try these simple strategies:

  • Offer quiet time after school. A cozy corner, storytime, or a favorite snack can help them decompress.
  • Validate their feelings. You might say, “It’s okay to feel a little sad or tired. Starting school is a big change.”
  • Stick to a calm evening routine. Predictability helps children feel secure when everything else feels new.

Use the Line Leader App to Stay Connected

One of the best tools for easing first-week jitters (for both kids and parents!) is our Line Leader app. Through the app, you’ll get real-time updates about your child’s day—photos, activities, meals, nap times, and more.

Tip: Use what you see in the app to start conversations at home.
Instead of “What did you do today?”, try:

  • “I saw you painted today! What colors did you use?”
  • “Looks like you read a book with Ms. ___. What was it about?”

This makes it easier for your child to reflect and share without feeling overwhelmed.

Parent Tips for a Positive Start

The first week of school lays the foundation for a year of growth, learning, and connection. Here are a few more ways to support your child during this transition:

  • Practice self-help skills. Let your child practice opening lunch containers, putting on shoes, or washing hands.
  • Talk about what to expect. A simple morning conversation like, “First we’ll drop you off, then you’ll have snack and play with your friends…” can ease anxiety.
  • Be patient with the process. Adjustment takes time, and every child moves at their own pace. Celebrate small wins—like a tear-free goodbye or a story about their new friend!
