Sparking Curiosity: Exploring Fire Safety with Your Child
This week at Discovery Preschools, our classrooms were filled with the excitement of sirens, fire trucks, and brave firefighters as we dove into celebrating Fire Prevention Week! Learning about community helpers is not only fun—it helps young children understand safety, build respect for important jobs, and develop a sense of belonging in their neighborhood.

To keep the learning going beyond the classroom, here are some simple and meaningful ways you can engage with the Fire Safety theme at home and in your community:
Visit Your Local Fire Station
Many fire stations offer free tours or open house events for families. It’s a great way for children to:
- See a real fire truck up close
- Meet firefighters in uniform (and hear their voice through a mask)
- Learn about fire safety in a hands-on way
Tip for Parents: Call ahead to schedule a visit, and let your child draw a thank-you card to give to the firefighters!
Practice Fire Safety at Home
Children love routines and “pretend play”—so turn fire safety into a game:
- Create an escape plan with your child: Show them how to “get low and go” under imaginary smoke.
- Test your smoke alarms together (kids love the beep!).
- Read a fire safety story at bedtime, like “No Dragons for Tea” or “Stop Drop and Roll”.
Talk about: Why firefighters wear their gear, what to do if they hear a smoke alarm, and how to call 911 in an emergency.
Play and Learn Together
Play is powerful! Reinforce what they learned in class through:
- Dramatic play: Use cardboard boxes to build a fire truck, or create a pretend dispatch center with walkie-talkies.
- Art projects: Make fire hats from red paper, paint a fire truck, or draw pictures of your local fire station.
- Songs and movement: Sing “Hurry, Hurry, Drive the Fire Truck!” while pretending to drive and spray the hose.
Get Involved in the Community
Many communities host events where firefighters are present, like safety fairs, parades, or National Fire Prevention Week (every October). These events are great chances to:
- Ask questions in a low-stress setting
- Collect fun safety materials
- Show appreciation to local heroes
Encourage Appreciation and Understanding
It’s important for children to know that firefighters are helpers—not scary, even when wearing heavy gear. Role-play, read books, or draw what a firefighter looks like to build comfort.
You can also:
- Write thank-you notes as a family
- Bake cookies or bring water bottles to donate to your local station
- Support local firehouse fundraisers or charity events
Final Thought
At Discovery Preschools, we believe real-world connections make learning stick. By exploring the Fire Department together—in playful, age-appropriate ways—you’re helping your child build trust in their community, understand safety, and see themselves as capable citizens.
Thank you for being our partners in learning and discovery!
