Summer Safety Tips for Young Children

As the days grow longer and the weather gets warmer, children naturally want to spend more time outdoors exploring, playing, and enjoying all that summer has to offer. At Discovery Preschools, we love seeing children engage in active outdoor play, water activities, and nature exploration. While summer is filled with fun and exciting opportunities, it is also important to keep safety in mind.

Here are some simple summer safety tips to help keep young children healthy, happy, and protected throughout the season.

Stay Hydrated

Young children can become dehydrated more quickly than adults, especially during hot weather. Encourage children to drink water regularly throughout the day, even if they do not feel thirsty. Offering water before, during, and after outdoor play can help children stay hydrated and energized.

Practice Sun Safety

Protecting children’s skin from the sun is an important part of summer safety. Apply sunscreen before outdoor activities and reapply as needed throughout the day. Lightweight clothing, hats, and shaded play areas can provide additional protection from harmful UV rays.

Dress for the Weather

Comfortable, lightweight clothing helps children stay cool while playing outside. Closed-toe shoes are often the safest choice for active play, helping to protect little feet from hot surfaces, scrapes, and falls.

Supervise Water Play

Whether children are playing at a splash table, sprinkler, pool, or beach, adult supervision is essential. Water play offers wonderful opportunities for learning and fun, but children should always be closely monitored around any amount of water.

Protect Against Insects

Summer brings opportunities to explore nature, but it also means encountering insects. Check children for bug bites after outdoor activities and follow recommended guidelines for insect protection. Teaching children not to disturb bees, wasps, or other insects can help prevent unwanted stings.

Check Playground Equipment

Playground surfaces and equipment can become very hot during the summer months. Before children play, check slides, swings, and other equipment to ensure they are safe and comfortable to touch.

Teach Basic Outdoor Safety Rules

Summer is a great time to reinforce simple safety habits such as staying within designated play areas, walking near water, listening to adults, and being aware of their surroundings. Consistent reminders help children build safe habits that can last a lifetime.

Make Safety Fun

Safety lessons do not have to be serious all the time. Reading books about summer safety, role-playing different situations, and discussing safe choices during everyday activities can help children learn important skills in an engaging way.

Enjoy a Safe and Fun Summer

At Discovery Preschools, we believe that children learn best through active exploration and hands-on experiences. By taking a few simple precautions, families can help ensure that summer remains a season filled with adventure, discovery, and joyful memories.

We wish all of our families a safe, healthy, and fun-filled summer!
